Portaal van Vlaanderen
Step on board: the Portaal van Vlaanderen (Portal of Flanders). The information center of Terneuzen. Discover everything that Terneuzen has to offer!
The Portaal van Vlaanderen is located in an ideal spot: directly by the water, overlooking the Terneuzen lock complex. Here, you literally and figuratively get a behind-the-scenes look at one of the busiest waterways in Europe!
What can you do here?
Guided Tours of the Lock Complex
One of the main attractions is the guided tour of the lock complex. Accompanied by enthusiastic volunteers, you gain insight into how the locks operate and learn about the construction of the impressive New Lock, one of the largest infrastructure projects currently in the Netherlands.
With the help of a little train, you will visit, among other places, the bridge chamber, the observation point, and, if you're lucky, see how enormous ships pass through the locks of Terneuzen.
Boat Tour
Step on board for a boat tour from the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal. During this trip, you experience the canal and companies along the canal from the water. A must-do for young and old!
Interactive Exhibition
Inside the information center, you'll find an interactive exhibition. Here, you can learn more about the history of the port, the development of the locks, and even about finds from the ground, such as mammoth bones and fossilized whale remains, which were excavated during the construction of the New Lock.
